Dec 28, 2018  Find the Serial Number On the PC’s Hardware, Box, or Elsewhere. If you don’t see a serial number after running the wmic command—or if you just can’t turn the PC on or don’t have access to it—there are several other places you might find the serial number. If you have a laptop, flip it over.

Windows doesn’t display your PC’s serial number anywhere in its interface, and neither do popular system information tools. But you can often find a PC’s serial number with a simple command, a peek in your BIOS, or on the hardware itself.

  1. Click to expand. Becaauusee I purchased motherboard from singapore and there is model number just 780 and serial number is 123456789 uuid is 123456789. So there is no model nr no serial.
  2. On some laptops, you will see the number on a manufacturer sticker on the bottom of the laptop. On others, you’ll see the number printed directly on the metal or plastic. If your laptop has a removable battery, the serial number is sometimes on a sticker inside the battery compartment, under the battery.

Run the WMIC Command

Open a Command Prompt window to get started. On Windows 10 or 8, right-click the Start button and select “Command Prompt”. On Windows 7, press Windows + R, type “cmd” into the Run dialog, and then press Enter.

At the Command Prompt, type the following command and then press Enter:

You’ll see the computer’s serial number displayed beneath the text “SerialNumber”. This command uses the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) tool to pull the system’s serial number from its BIOS.

If you don’t see your PC’s serial number, blame your PC’s manufacturer. The number will only appear here if the PC manufacturer saved it to your computer’s BIOS or UEFI firmware. PC manufacturers don’t always fill in the number properly. In that case, you’ll see something like “0” or “To be filled by O.E.M.” instead of an actual serial number.

This is also true if you built your own PC because the PC itself won’t have a serial number. However, you can look up the serial number of your motherboard and other components.

Check the BIOS

You may also be able to find the serial number in the BIOS or UEFI firmware settings screen. This technique won’t get you a serial number if the wmic command didn’t, since the command pulls the serial number from the BIOS. However, checking the BIOS could be helpful if you can’t actually sign into Windows to run the wmic command.

Access the BIOS or UEFI firmware settings screen and look around for a “Serial Number” somewhere on a system information screen. It’ll be in a different place on different PCs, but you can usually find it somewhere on the “Main” or “System” screen.

Find the Serial Number On the PC’s Hardware, Box, or Elsewhere

If you don’t see a serial number after running the wmic command—or if you just can’t turn the PC on or don’t have access to it—there are several other places you might find the serial number:

  • If you have a laptop, flip it over. On some laptops, you’ll see the number on a sticker. On others, you’ll see the number printed directly on the metal or plastic the laptop is made from. If your laptop has a removable battery, the serial number is sometimes on a sticker inside the battery compartment, under the battery.
  • If you have a desktop PC, look at the back, top, or side of the case for some sort of sticker. The number may also be on a sticker inside the case, so you might have to open it up.
  • If you can’t find the serial number on the PC itself, look online for instructions specific to your model. The manufacturer’s website should tell you exactly where to look.
  • If you registered your PC with the manufacturer or received warranty service, the serial number should be included in the registration documentation, warranty service receipt, or email confirmation for the service.

Laptop Serial Number Check

  • If you still have the original product box, it usually has the serial number printed on it—often on the same sticker with the bar code.
  • If you purchased the PC online or in store, the serial number may be printed on the physical or email receipt you received.

And if you just can’t find your serial number at all, don’t give up hope. If you have proof of purchase, the manufacturer still may be able to help you with whatever service you need and may even be able to find out the serial number for you.

The Volume Serial Number (also known as VSN) is a unique serial number that is assigned to an optical disk (CD or DVD) or a hard drive after formatting. The Volume Serial Number was added by Microsoft and IBM so that the operating system could recognize if an optical disk or a drive is changed on the system. By that time the only way to determine this, was the volume label (Volume Name) that the user defined to each storage disk. But that way, there was a problem if a user gave the same (Volume) name to two (or more) disks. To bypass this problem, Microsoft and IBM decided to assign a new unique number in hexadecimal form (called 'Volume Serial Number' or 'Volume ID' or 'VSN') when a drive (optical disk or hard drive) was formatted.

In simple words, the Volume Serial Number indicates the exact time {Date, Month, Year & Time (Hour, Minute & Second)} of format operation. The VSN is changed anytime you format the disk, so if you re-install Windows and you format the system disk, Windows will ask again for activation.

Taking advantage of VSN, some software vendors use the Volume Serial Number to avoid pirate copying of their products. This means that software from these vendors can not run if the Volume Serial Number is different from the VSN of the product's original optical disk that was shipped or of the hard drive that the software was first installed. Also this technique was previously used by multiplayer game vendors to ban the gamers that tried to cheat. Nowadays, this method is useless because the game or software vendors now use the hardcoded serial number (HDD Manufacture's S/N that is embedded into the firmware) to identify (ban) cheaters or they ban the CD key.

In this article you will find detailed instructions on how to change the hard drive's Volume Serial Number (aka Volume ID or VSN).

Change Laptop Serial Number

How to change HDD Volume Serial Number (VolumeID).

Option 1: Using Sysinternals VolumeID changer.

Laptop

VolumeID by Mark Russinovich, is another freeware tool that helps you to change the Volume IDs of drives from command line window.

Hp Laptop Serial Number

1. Download VolumeID.

2. Extract 'volumeid.zip' file contents and move the extracted files ('Volumeid.exe' & 'Eula.txt') to the root of C: drive.

3. Open an elevated command prompt. To do that:

In Windows 7, Vista & XP: 1. Go to Start > All Programs. 2. Click to expand Accessories. 2. Right click on Command Prompt and choose 'Run as administrator'

In Windows 8

Right-click at the screen's bottom-left corner and from the pop-up menu, choose 'Command Prompt (Admin)'.

4. Let's say that we want to change the Volume serial number of the system drive C:.

Inside the command prompt window, type the following command to see the current Volume Serial Number of C: drive

vol

4a. The 'vol' command should return the Volume Serial Number. In this example the VSN is '94F8-9C08'.

Whoever breaks the law in these darkest of times is sentenced to serve in the giant penal colony of Khorinis, mining the so much needed ore.The whole area, dubbed “the Colony”, is surrounded by a magical barrier, a sphere two kilometres diameter, sealing off the penal colony from the outside world. Orcish hordes invaded human territory and the king of the land needed a lot of ore to forge enough weapons, should his army stand against this threat. The barrier can be passed from the outside in – but once inside, nobody can escape.

5. Navigate to the root folder of Disk C: (where 'volumeid.exe' is located/saved) and type the following command:

volumeid <driveletter:> xxxx-xxxx

* As <driveletter:> : type the drive of the disk (drive or volume) that we want to change the VSN ('C:').

** As xxxx-xxxx : type the new Volume Serial Number (e.g. 74F8-9C08).

In this example I want to change the VSN of disk C: and I have changed only one character (the first) of the old VSN to specify the new one. So the full command should be:

volumeid c: 74F8-9C08

5. When 'volumeid' command updates the Volume ID of your drive, close the command prompt window and restart your computer.

Option 2: Using Hard Disk Serial Number Changer.

Update: The download link is not working anymore (removed).

The second free tool you can use to change the Volume Serial Number is called Hard Disk Serial Number Changer. The program can change only the HDD's Volume Serial Number and not the Hardcoded Serial Number.
